The National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has held the Railways responsible for the theft of a passenger’s luggage and asked him to pay a compensation of Rs 4.7 lakh. Actually, the incident happened in the year 2007 when Dilip Kumar Chaturvedi, a resident of Durg, was traveling in the sleeper coach of the train from Katni railway station to Durg railway station. During this time, some cash and goods worth Rs 9.3 lakh were stolen at around 2:30 in the morning.

After this, he complained about this in Durg District Consumer Commission, after which South East Central Railway asked him to give compensation but Durg and Bilaspur GRP police station in-charge challenged the decision of South East Central Railway in the State Commission. After this, Dilip Chaturvedi filed a review petition in NCDRC i.e. National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

In which he told that due to the negligence of TTE, unauthorized people entered the coach and committed theft. The same was in peace and there were complete preparations for its safety. But due to the negligence of TTE, the goods were stolen and hence Section 100 of the Railway Act does not apply in this case.
