Encounter of Bahraich violence accused: Sarfaraz, accused in Bahraich violence, was shot at in an encounter near the Nepal border while attempting to flee. Another accused, Talib, was also injured. The accused were on the run after a youth was killed in the violence which broke out during an idol immersion last week.


New Delhi: The accused in Bahraich violence, Sarfaraz, was shot at in an encounter near Nepal border on Thursday. According to reports, he suffered a gun shot wound in his leg. He was shot at while trying to cross over to Nepal by UP cops. Sarfaraz is accused of firing at the victim Ramgopal Mishra during the violence which broke out during idol immersion of goddess Durga in the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh.

Another accused, Talib, was also injured in the police firing. The encounter occurred on Thursday near the Handabasehari canal, close to the Nepal border. The cops have also recovered the murder weapon from their possession which they allegedly used to kill Ramgopal. Both were admitted to district hospital in Bahraich, where they are said to be stable. Police have increased security around the hospital.

Sarfaraz was on the run since violence broke out

After the violence, Sarfaraz had been on the run. Police teams were searching for him but were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, police received information that Sarfaraz was trying to flee to Nepal. On Thursday, the police set up a blockade and surrounded Sarfaraz and his accomplice Talib near the Handabasehari canal, close to the Nepal border. The police asked them to surrender, but they began firing at the cops. In the retaliatory action, both Sarfaraz and Talib were injured by police fire. They were rushed to the hospital, where their condition remains critical.

Five suspects also arrested after encounter

ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash reported that five suspects were arrested during the police encounter. On October 13, there was a clash between two groups during the idol immersion in the Maharajganj area in Bahraich. The situation escalated to the point where one side shot and killed Ramgopal. Following Ramgopal’s murder, tensions soared, leading to arson and vandalism. Shops, vehicles, and homes were set ablaze by miscreants.

The district police administration failed to control the unrest. A team of senior police officials was dispatched from Lucknow to Bahraich on the directions of chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Additionally, several contingents of PAC, CRPF, and RAF were deployed in the violence-affected area. ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash personally took charge in the field against the rioters. A video also surfaced showing him confronting the rioters with pistol in hand.
