Pune, 18th October 2024: With the Maharashtra assembly elections around the corner, the Pune office of the Income Tax (IT) Department has initiated a special campaign to prevent the misuse of money by candidates during the election period. This move comes in response to concerns about unethical practices involving financial influence in elections, aiming to ensure a fair and transparent process.

The campaign involves the establishment of a control room to actively monitor potential financial irregularities related to election spending. The Income Tax Department has also launched a set of toll-free numbers—18002330353 and 18002330354—allowing citizens to report any suspected malpractices. Additionally, residents can submit complaints via WhatsApp by sending messages, videos, or photos to the number 9421546484.

The campaign extends beyond Pune to cover districts like Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Solapur, Satara, Sangli, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and Ahilya Devinagar. Citizens in these regions are encouraged to report any suspicious activities they observe. Complaints can also be submitted via email or physical letter, as shared by the Income Tax Department.

The announcement comes on the heels of the Central Election Commission’s declaration of the assembly election schedule. Maharashtra will witness polling for 288 assembly seats on November 20 in a single phase, while Jharkhand will hold elections in two phases on November 13 and 20. Vote counting for both states is scheduled for November 23. With the election dates set, the Model Code of Conduct is now in effect in both states.
