Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar appointed chairperson of National Commission for Women

New Delhi. Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar has been appointed chairperson of the National Commission for Women. The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development said here on Saturday that she will be the 9th chairperson of the Commission. This notification was issued late Friday evening.

Rahatkar has discharged various political and social responsibilities. During her tenure as chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women (2016-2021), she founded Sakshaka (support for acid attack survivors), Prajwala (linking self-help groups with central government schemes), and Suhita (helpline for women Have worked for programs like Seva).

He also worked on legal reforms, focusing on issues such as POCSO, anti-triple talaq cells and anti-human trafficking units. She started digital literacy programs and started a publication called Saad dedicated to women’s issues. As mayor of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar from 2007 to 2010, Rahatkar implemented important development projects related to healthcare and infrastructure.

Mrs. Rahatkar holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics and a master’s degree in History from the University of Pune. She has written several books, including ‘Vidhilikhit’ (on women’s legal issues) and ‘Aurangabad: Leading to Wide Roads’.

Her contribution to women’s empowerment has earned her honors including the National Law Award and the Savitribai Award from the National Literary Council. Along with this, Dr. Archana Majumdar has also been appointed member of the National Commission for Women.
