New rule on car registration fees, know or else you will have to regret
The central government has issued new rules regarding registration of your car and bike. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) has issued a notification on 20 August 2025. Under this, a new fee has been fixed for renewal of registration of 20 year old vehicles. These rules are now implemented with the published in the official gazette. The new rule is a major setback for those who are emotionally connected to old trains.

It is necessary for you to know this rule. According to the new rule, for registration of vehicles older than 20 years from now, fees will have to be paid in different categories. The rules have been implemented under Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2025.
Old vehicles will be charged more fees
In a recently released notification, MRTH has allegedly announced that it will now take Rs 2,000 to renew the registration of a motorcycle over 20 years old as per the new rule. Owners of light motor vehicles (LMV), more than 20 years old, will now have to pay Rs 10,000 instead of Rs 5,000 for renewal.

Imported vehicles will get more money
Owners of imported two -wheelers or three -wheelers will have to pay Rs 20,000 for renewal, and owners of imported cars or four wheelers will have to pay a heavy duty of Rs 80,000. The ministry issued an amendment draft in February and finalized it on 21 August. The step has been taken after the move taken by the government in October 2021 when it increased the renewal and registration fee of motorcycles, cars and three -wheelers. Meanwhile, the issue of the age limit of vehicles continues in courts.
In the beginning of August, the Supreme Court directed the officials not to take any punitive action against the owners of diesel vehicles older than 10 years older and 15 years old in Delhi-NCR. The bench issued this order after the Delhi government requested the court to consider their actual use instead of their construction year only while implementing the age limit policy of vehicles.
