Born in 1891, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was not only the ruler of Patiala, but also a great cricketer. He was the grandfather of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The Maharaja played 27 first class matches, in which he scored 643 runs in 40 innings and also took two wickets.

Unfortunately, in 1938, at the age of 52, he died due to alleged deteriorating health. Several sources suggest that liver damage caused by excessive alcohol to play a major role in their deteriorating health and ultimately death.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh produced “Patiala Paag”

Apart from cricket and alcohol, Bhupinder Singh’s lifestyle often made headlines. After the coronation at the age of just nine, he remained the Maharaja until his death in 1938. Known for his extravagance, he married ten times.

He was rumored that he had ties with over 350 girlfriends and was the father of 88 children. His luxurious life, his passion of cricket and notorious alcohol drinking habits made him one of the most colorful persons in India’s sports and royal history.
