American Flag Burning
Washington: US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order in which the Department of Justice has been directed to investigate people who burn American flag and prosecute them. The Supreme Court of America, however, considered the flag burning as a valid political expression protected by the Constitution. The US Supreme Court ruled with a majority of five against four that the first amendment of the American flag provides protection as a legitimate political expression to burning the US flag.
What did Donald Trump say?
The order signed in the ‘Oval Office’ (President’s Office) has accepted a decision of the Supreme Court in a case associated with Texas in 1989, but at the same time it has also been said that there is a scope for prosecution in such cases. President Donald Trump said that burning American flag can erupt riots that we have never seen before. The executive order signed by the President states that insult to the American flag is ‘extremely aggressive and stimulating’ act. It is a symbol of contempt, enmity and violence towards our nation. This shows opposition to America’s values and freedom. It was also said in the order that there is a possibility of violence and rioting from such acts.
What will happen to a foreign national?
The order urged the Attorney General to strictly implement criminal and civil laws as far as possible in cases like burning the flag. Trump said that the accused of burning the flag should be jailed for one year and there should be no option of early release. The order also states that if a foreign national burns the flag, its visa, residence permit, citizenship process and other immigration benefits can be canceled. They can also be expelled from the country. (AP)
