Government strict before festive season, government reduced wheat stock limit, know new limit

The central government on Tuesday further tightened the stocking boundaries of wheat for wholesale traders, small and large retail chain stores and processors. This step has been taken with the aim of preventing hoarding and keeping wheat prices under control, especially keeping in mind the upcoming festivals. According to PTI news, the Food Ministry said that the central government has amended the stock limit implemented till 31 March 2026 to keep wheat prices stable before the festive season.

How many limits for amendment (till 31 March 2026)

Wholesale traders: Now instead of 3,000 tonnes, you will be able to keep wheat up to 2,000 tonnes.


Retailer: The stock limit at each outlet has been reduced from 10 tons to 8 tonnes.

Large retail chain stores: Each outlet can be placed up to a maximum of 8 tonnes of stocks, whereas earlier it was 10 tons.

Processor: Now they will be able to stock up to 60% wheat instead of 70% depending on the remaining months of their monthly established capacity.

There were changes before this year

On 20 February 2025, the limit of traders was 250 tonnes and the retail outlet limit was 4 tonnes.
On 27 May 2025, it was again increased to 3,000 tonnes for traders and 10 tons for retail outlets.
Now this order will be applicable till 31 March 2026 with new amendments.

Registration and monitoring

Food Ministry stocked all wheat stock units It is mandatory to register on the portal and update your stock status every Friday. Whoever keeps more stock than the fixed limit, will have to be brought to the limit within 15 days. Strict action will be taken against those who violate the rules under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

Availability and production of wheat

The Ministry also clarified that the public distribution system (PDS), other welfare schemes and wheat supply for the market are available in sufficient quantity. In 2024-25, the country produced a record 117.50 million tonnes of wheat. 30.03 million tonnes of wheat has been procured so far in 2025-26 marketing year. The government is strictly monitoring stock to keep wheat prices stable and to ensure its availability in the country.
