While another America is trying to take 50 percent tariff on India, India is trying to take India’s restraint examination, now US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik has spoken about a big change in H-1B visa, green card system. He described the H-1B visa program as a “scam” that ignores American employees. He said that Indian professionals have more benefits from the H-1B visa program, which is the highest among the H-1B holders.

In an interview with Fox News’s host Laura Ingraham, Lutnik said, “The current H-1B visa system is a scam that gives foreign employees a chance to fill American job opportunities. Appointing American employees should be the priority of all major American businesses.” Lutnik criticized the existing green card system and described the income level of the beneficiaries as evidence of incorrect priorities. He said “We give green cards – the average US earns $ 75,000 annually and the average green card holder $ 66,000. Why are we doing this? It’s like choosing lower level people,”

He argued that under the leadership of Donald Trump, the immigration policy would move towards attracting money and skills. “This is why Donald Trump is going to change it – this is the gold card coming here, and with this we will start choosing the best people.”

Gold card scheme

The Commerce Secretary also gave details of the proposed ‘Gold Card’ program under consideration by the Trump administration. Under this proposal, foreigners investing at least 5 million dollars will be provided permanent American residence.

Lutnik claimed that the demand is already high, 2,50,000 potential applicants are in queue. If this plan is realized, it can invest up to $ 1.25 trillion.

Lutnik said. “This is the gord card that is coming. And from here we will start selecting the best people to come to this country. Now the time has come to change it,”

This comment has come at a time when President Trump has confirmed support for the H-1B program and described it as necessary to bring “enabled” and “great” individuals to America.

In January, Trump told reporters, “You have to bring the best people. We have to bring quality people. By doing this, we are expanding businesses, and everyone is being taken care of.”

India is the most affected

Any change in the visa system will have a profound impact on Indian professionals. In the financial year 2023, more than 72% of the approved H-1B applications were for Indian citizens. Currently the maximum limit of H-1B visa is 65,000, in addition 20,000 slots are reserved for US advanced degree holders, which are allocated through lottery system.
