Bogota: Democracy was crushed and murdered in the South American country of Colombia. Earlier this year, popular presidential candidate Miguel Uribe was shot dead during a political rally for the presidential election here. This led to blood stains on democracy. Now his father Miguel Uribe Londono has announced to contest the presidential election to carry forward his son’s legacy.

Why Londono contesting elections

72 -year -old Londono on Tuesday announced his candidature during a public speech outside the Congress (Parliament) Bhavan located in the capital Bogota. He gave a speech from the same platform, which was decorated with symbols and slogans of his son’s election campaign. But his son was murdered here. He said that this step is not only an attempt to keep the son’s memory alive, but also an attempt to contribute towards the creation of a more secure and rich Colombia.

Miguel Uribe (son) was a member of the Senate of Columbia and was particularly popular among young voters. His murder shook the entire country and his funeral was covered at the national level. He has been a member of the Bogota Municipal Council in the late 1980s and has also been the Senator of the Conservative Party in the early 1990s. However, he had never planned to contest for the presidency. He took this decision only after the untimely death of the son.

Criticism of leftists

In his speech, London criticized the country’s current leftist President Gustavo Petro’s government. He said that Colombia is going to “a dangerous path”. He urged the citizens to vote in large numbers in next year’s presidential elections and play their role in bringing changes. (Language)
