Will silver be expensive from September 1, will the new rules of silver hallmarking apply?
Silver halmarking: Like gold, hall marking is going to be mandatory in silver from September 1. With this, customers will now get a guarantee of purity on silver jewelery just like gold. At present, this rule will not be mandatory. Customers can buy hallmark jewelery, but they will also have the opportunity to buy silver without hallmark. Now questions are arising that along with hallmarking, silver prices will also increase.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has fixed 6 standard 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 and 990 for silver purity. Now there will be a 6 -digit unique code on every hallmark jewelery. Wrote on jewelry, based on the code, it can be ascertained how pure silver is? This system will replace the old hallmarking method and bring more transparency.
What is hallmarking: Hallmarking means certifying the purity of the metal. Jewelry is traced after testing in BIS lab. This makes the customer believe that the jewel for which he is paying is equally pure. If 800 numbers are written on silver, then silver is 80 percent pure while it is 99 percent pure if 990 is marked on it.
Gold hallmarking took place in 2021: The government had made hallmarking mandatory on gold jewelery in the year 2021, similarly this rule is also being implemented on silver. Its purpose is to make the jewelery market more transparent.
What will be the benefit to customers? Buying hallmark jewelery will not affect silver prices, but this can increase customers’ confidence. There is a possibility of adulteration in jewelery without hallmark. But now the hallmark and HUID number will reduce the scope of fraud. Customers will be able to easily check the BIS Care app and check through the verify HUID feature whether the code inscribed on the jewelry is real or fake.
