RTO Seizes 500 Licenses as Pune Police Target Drunk Drivers with Night Checkings

Pune, 7th November 2024: The traffic police have launched an action campaign targeting violators of traffic rules in response to the increasing number of accidents in the city. Checkings (Nakabandi) have been ordered to take place every night to curb incidents of drunk driving.

In the past four months, action has been taken against 2,500 drunk drivers, and the Regional Transport Department (RTO) has seized the driving licenses of 500 individuals.

Following instructions from the Commissioner of Police, a campaign against drunk driving has been ramped up with nightly blockades across the city. The traffic police have set up 27 blockade points throughout Pune, and an officer of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police has been assigned to oversee the operation.

From 11 pm to 3 am each day, drivers are being checked at various locations. A team of 125 police personnel, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police, will be involved in the operation under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Branch, Amol Zende. Action has also been taken against drivers traveling in the wrong direction. Any vehicles violating traffic rules will be impounded.

Amol Zende, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Branch, said, “Vehicles are often driven at high speeds after consuming alcohol. Most accidents occur due to overspeeding and disregard for traffic rules. Blockades will be conducted every night to ensure discipline among drivers. The action against drunk drivers will continue. In the first phase, a proposal to cancel the licenses of 500 drivers has been submitted to the RTO.”
