Building falls in Virar, 17 deaths so far: 5 bodies found today, 9 injured

The death toll in Virar in Palghar district of Maharashtra has increased to 17. In Vijay Nagar of Virar area, at 12.05 pm on August 26, around 50 flats, a four -storey Ramabai apartment collapsed on a vacant house next to the 12 flats.

The death of 12 people was confirmed yesterday. Today, the bodies of 5 people were found during the rescue operation. 9 people are injured. At the time of the accident, the birthday party of a one -year -old girl was going on on the fourth floor, when the accident took place. In this, the girl, her mother and many guests have also died.

Builder arrested on people’s complaint

District Collector of Palghar, Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar confirmed on Thursday morning that the girl was also involved in the incident, whose birthday was being celebrated at that time. 9 people who were injured and rescued are undergoing treatment. Teams are investigating the debris to find out if no other person is trapped.

Local people have accused the builder and officials of negligence. People have demanded that an inquiry should be investigated how so many residents were allowed to live. On Wednesday, on the complaint of VVMC, the police arrested the builder.

District Disaster Management Officer Vivekananda Kadam said that the 2012 Ramabai apartment has 50 flats and there were 12 apartments in the collapsed part. As a precaution, all the chawls around the building have been evacuated and people have been evacuated to safe places.

Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Sanjay Hirwade said, “Residents say that 2 people are missing and rescue operations to find them. The affected families are temporarily kept in Chandansar Samaj Mandir. They are being given food, water, medical support and other essential services.
