Feeling the need to provide modern education to Muslims, the great social reformer of that time, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, established the Muslim Anglo Oriental College in 1877. This college later became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. It was one of the four central universities of the country after independence.

There he visited world famous institutions like Oxford and Cambridge and dreamed of spreading the light of modern education in India also. He came back and established a madrasa in Aligarh with only seven students. Gradually the number of students started increasing and in 1877, Anglo Oriental College was started by expanding it. This college became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920, which is famous throughout the world as a prestigious educational institution.
