There is a big news for the drivers traveling on the National Highway. Soon the entire process of toll tax collection on Indian highways and expressways is going to change. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology will now be used instead of Fastag. This new system is more advanced and effective than Fastag. Its testing has started at some toll points, after which there is a plan to implement it in the entire country in a phased manner.

What is GNSS system and how will it work?

GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is a GPS based tracking system. This technology will monitor the movements of your vehicle through the GPS tracker installed in the vehicle. When you enter a national highway or expressway, your toll collection will be automatically deducted by directly linking it to your bank account. This means that you will be charged toll for the distance you travel on the highway.

Toll collection will be done without gate

GNSS technology is smarter and faster than Fastag. There will be no need of any kind of gate in this. Your vehicle will not even need to stop at the toll booth. Your vehicle’s toll will be deducted within microseconds and you can continue your journey at high speed.

GNSS system will be implemented in a phased manner

India currently has a national highway network of about 1.5 lakh kilometers, out of which toll tax is collected on about 50 thousand kilometers. The central government has decided to implement this new technology in a phased manner. By June 2025, GNSS system will be implemented on 2 thousand kilometers. There is a plan to increase it to 50 thousand kilometers in the next two years. This will not only save petrol, diesel and CNG but will also save time for the drivers. Now people will not have to wait in long queues, which will make travel more convenient.

Time and fuel will be saved

After the implementation of the GNSS system, vehicles will not need to stop at toll plazas. This will also eliminate the problem of traffic jam during travel. Apart from this, the number of staff deployed at toll plazas will also reduce, which will also reduce administrative expenses. With the implementation of this new system, the government will get real-time data about which vehicle is covering what distance. This will also reduce the cases of toll evasion.

How to get GNSS tracker?

To use the GNSS system, it will be mandatory to install GPS trackers in vehicles. This tracker will track the movements of your vehicle through satellite. This tracker will be linked to your bank account from which toll charges will be deducted directly. The government plans to have this tracker already installed with new vehicles in the future. Whereas owners of old vehicles will have to get it installed separately.

Transparency will increase in toll tax collection

The introduction of GNSS system will bring transparency in toll tax collection. Currently, toll collection is being done through Fastag but many irregularities have come to light in it. Calculating toll fee through GNSS will be absolutely accurate as it will be directly based on the tracking of your vehicle.

When will the GNSS system start?

The government has released a timeline for implementing GNSS technology. In the first phase, it will be implemented on about 2 thousand kilometers of national highways by June 2025. After this, it will be expanded to 50 thousand kilometers in the next two years.
