Kenya government cancels agreements with Adani Group after allegations in America
Nairobi, 21 November (HS). Following the charges against Indian industrialist Gautam Adani and seven others in the US, Kenya has ordered the cancellation of the agreement with the Adani Group, in which Kenya was to hand over the control of the main airport to the Indian group. Kenyan President William Ruto said on Thursday that he took this decision after the company’s founder was indicted in the US.
President Ruto said he has also directed the Energy Ministry to cancel a $736 million public-private partnership agreement, which had a 30-year term, with an Adani Group unit last month to build power distribution lines.
Kenyan President Ruto, in his address to the nation, said that I have directed the agencies of the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum to immediately cancel the ongoing procurement process. He attributed this decision to the new information provided by the investigating agencies and partner countries.
US officials said last Wednesday that Gautam Adani, one of the world’s richest people, and seven other defendants had agreed to pay bribes worth about $265 million to Indian government officials. However, Adani Group denied the allegations and said in a statement that it would explore all possible legal remedies.
Earlier, Energy Minister Opio Wandayi had said that there was no bribery or corruption involved in the transmission lines contracts.
