The accused have suffered a major setback from the High Court in the big conspiracy case behind the Delhi riots in February 2020. The Delhi High Court has rejected the bail plea of 9 accused including Sharjil Imam, Umar Khalid on Tuesday in the illegal activities (prevention) Act (UAPA) case related to the conspiracy of the riots. A bench of Delhi High Court Justices Naveen Chawla and Justice Shailendra Kaur refused to bail Shazil Imam, Umar Khalid, Mohammad Salim Khan, Shifa Ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Miran Haider, Abdul Khalid Saifi, Taslim Ahmed and Gulfisha Fatima.
Delhi Police protested against bail plea
Explain that on July 10, the Delhi High Court reserved the verdict after hearing the bail petitions of the accused. During the hearing, Delhi Police opposed bail petitions. Claimed that it was not a spontaneous riot, but a planned conspiracy.
What did Tusshar Mehta argue?
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the prosecution, argued that it was a conspiracy to discredit India in the world, it would not be right to give bail only on the basis that the accused have been in captivity for a long time. The prosecution strongly opposed the bail plea and argued that it is not only a case of riots but is a case where the riots were already made with a frightening motive and thought-off conspiracy.
53 people died in Delhi riots
In the riots in February 2020, 53 people died and more than 700 people were injured. The violence erupted during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Citizen Register (NRC). The bail petitions of the Sharjil Imam, Khalid Saifi, Gulfisha Fatima and other accused were pending in the High Court since 2022 and from time to time various benches heard them.
