A big agreement on the Tijuana River in the US-Mexico, falls into the Pacific Ocean
Tijuana River Agreement in America-Mexico.
San Diego: There has been a big agreement between the US and Mexico on the Tijuana River. The two countries have entered into an agreement to deal with the old problem of polluting the beaches of California in the US border of Tijuana. Let us tell you that billions of gallons dirty water and poisonous chemistry flow from the Tijuana River in the Pacific Ocean, causing closure of the beaches of Southern California and the Navy seals that are trained there have also become ill. But now the time limit for the solution of this problem has been fixed.
The problem was not cured even after spending millions of dollars
This problem has been going on for many years. Many attempts and millions of dollars were spent during Trump Administration-1 to solve this, yet there was no solution. Mexico’s Environment Minister Alysis Barsena said, “The commitment to strengthen cooperation between the two countries is very deep.” He said this after signing a memorandum of MoU with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chief Lee Zeldin in Mexico City. Three months before the agreement, Zeldin went to San Diego and visited the border area and made a direct experience of the problem.
Jeldin of Tijuana told bad condition
Geldin said, “I have been facing the same foul smell that have been facing the local people for years. I saw the plight of the Tijuana River Valley, heard about the closed beaches and met the navy seals whose training was affected. It was a very effective journey for me.” Mexico will complete infrastructure projects at a cost of $ 93 million (about ₹ 770 crore) by 2027. The Tijuana River is 120 miles long and originates from Mexico. The California border of the US flows towards the Pacific Ocean. With the increase in population and industries of Tijuana, the amount of dirty water and the amount of industrial chemicals dissolved in it have also increased significantly.
100 billion gallon raw sewage released from Tijuana in 7 years
Since 2018, more than 100 billion gallons of raw sewage has been released from Tijuana River. It contains chemicals and garbage, it flows in California. This pollution is not only making swimmers and the people living on the beach, but also the border petrol agents, children and school staff. Scientists say that this sewage goes inside the air and goes through the breath by evaporating in the air.
Beaches
California beaches near the border have been closed most of the time in the last four years. “People living on the banks of the Tijuana river have been facing this public health crisis for a long time,” said Christon Kalbert, an officer of the “American Reverse” institution. Since 2020, $ 653 million (₹ 5400+ crores) has been spent so far. According to Zeldin, the reason for the continuation of the problem has been mainly delayed by the Government of Mexico.
Promise of new President of Mexico
The new President of Mexico, Claudia Shinbaum, took over last October. He has promised that his government will build a new Westwater treatment plant, which will reduce pollution. “We will also complete many other projects next year to improve the sewage system of the entire Tijuana region,” he said.
America and Mexico will do this work
Under this, the US will complete the expansion of South Bay International Treatment Plant by next month. At the same time, Mexico will remove 10 million gallons purified daily from the sea and send it elsewhere. Citing another agreement related to water supply in Rio Grande, Shinbaum said that when technical teams sit together, complex problems can also be solved. (AP/PTI)
