A peak of Ladakh will be named ‘Abhaya’, murdered after gangrape in RG Kar

A team of climbers, scientists and physicians will climb an anonymous peak as part of a campaign in the remote Tso-Mori region of Leh district of Ladakh. Along with this, this peak, 6,105 meters high, will be named ‘Abhaya’ symbolically. Last year, a trainee female doctor was murdered after raping a trainee female medical at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The team has decided to name this peak in memory of a female doctor. This campaign, titled the Project Seema (Sustainable Empowerment and Exploration in Mountains Area), aims to link mountain exploration to social, scientific and developmental initiatives. The group will also study glaciers, rivers, lakes, agriculture and climate change in the challenging ecosystem of the Himalayas.

Senior climber Debashish Biswas, who is leading the campaign, told Leh over the phone, “His (female doctor) death shook the conscience of the entire country.” We want to dedicate them to one of these anonymous peaks and honor them and therefore, it will be named ‘Abhaya’ on his symbolic name. “The team, which sets the base camp in Korzok Fu, includes prominent professors, researchers, climate experts, medical professional and social development activists from all over India.
RG Kar was murdered after gang rape in medical college
Significantly, a trainee student was gangraped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College. There was anger all over the country after the matter came to light. A large -scale protest was organized by the doctors regarding this. The main accused of this incident is currently behind the prison bars and legal action is on.
