Mosul: A historic moment was seen in Mosul city of Iraq on Monday when Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani inaugurated the 850-year-old Al-Nuri Mosque in Mosul after rebuilding. Along with this, its tilted tower, famous worldwide, was also opened to the public. Let us know that this mosque was destroyed by the bombings by the Islamic State terrorists at 2017. After 8 years, it has been rebuilt using traditional methods and remaining debris with the help of UNESCO. An amount of $ 115 million was raised for this reconstruction, with a major contribution by the United Arab Emirates and the European Union.

Why is the Al-Nuri Mosque special?

The Al-Nuri Mosque and its tilted tower are considered to be the heart of the old city of Mosul. The mosque was built at the end of the 12th century, and was named after Noor al-Din Mahmud Jangi. Jangi was the ruler of Mosul and Alepo, who ordered the construction of this mosque 2 years before his death. The tower of this mosque, which the local people love ‘Habba’ (Kubra), were famous for their unique texture. In 2014, the kingpin of Islamic State Abu Bakr al-Bagdadi announced his so-called ‘Khilafat’ from here. This mosque is part of not only religious, but also the historical and cultural identity of Iraq.

‘This is a milestone’

On the occasion of the inauguration, Prime Minister Al-Sudani said, ‘The reconstruction of this mosque is evidence of the bravery of the Iraqis and the courage to protect their land. It is a milestone, which will always remind the enemies of our strength and truth. We are ready to promote culture and Iraqi archaic items. This is the door to the world of our country, which will open new paths for the youth. ‘ This project can become an example for the restoration of cultural sites in war -torn areas such as neighboring countries, where reconstruction is now beginning after the 14 -year civil war.

IS had crossed the extent of cruelty

The Islamic State had captured a large part of Iraq and Syria in its peak and committed heinous crimes such as rape, kidnapping and torture to women from the Yazidi community. He also targeted the Christian community, including snatching their property, forced conversion and destroying cultural sites. There were 50,000 Christians in Mosul in 2003, but now only 20 families are left. In this project, the mosque as well as the damaged churches in the war has also been restored to save the heritage of the city’s shrinking Christian population.
