After Kohli’s retirement, who will now get the role of number 4 in the Test? Kumble took a shocking name
After retirement from Virat Kohli’s Test cricket, now Team India needs a new number 4 batsman. While KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are considered a favorite for this role, former India captain Anil Kumble surprised everyone by taking the name of Karun Nair. Kumble believes that Karun has performed brilliantly in domestic cricket and can prove to be an experienced and fit option for a challenging tour like England.
Virat Kohli ended an era on May 12 with retirement from Test cricket. For more than a decade, he has been batting at number 4 for India. But now when Team India is going on a tour of England in June, the search for the new number 4 has started.
Names like KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are considered to be at the forefront, but former India captain and veteran spinner Anil Kumble has named Karun Nair at the forefront. Kumble said that Karun has performed tremendously in domestic cricket and should get a chance to return to the Test team.
Kumble said in a conversation at ESPNcricinfo, “No one may think too much about number 4. Karun has experience, he has also played county cricket and is aware of the circumstances of England. Even though the age is crossing 30, but there is still a lot of cricket left in him.”
Karun Nair is only the second Indian batsman to score a triple century in Test cricket. In the domestic season of 2024-25, he batted brilliantly for Vidarbha. If Karun gets a chance, then it will also be a big message for many young players playing domestic cricket that the reward of hard work and performance is definitely received.
