After interrogation, he was arrested and produced in the court of Colombo Fort Magistrate.
In which streams have been arrested
According to officials, the case against Wickramasinghe is related to the alleged misuse of about 1.66 crore Sri Lankan rupees, which were spent during his President’s tenure. In this regard, the CID has accused Wickramasinghe under Section 386 and 388 of the Sri Lankan Penal Code as well as Section 5 (1) of the Public Property Act. Under these sections, there is a provision for punishment ranging from minimum one year to maximum 20 years.
There will be appearance again after 26 August
The court has ordered the accused to be detained till 26 August at the request of CID. This arrest is considered a significant turn in Sri Lankan politics, where examples of legal action against former presidents are very few. Experts believe that this matter will not only come into the discussion about the administrative accountability of the country, but it can also raise questions on the transparency of the financial decisions of the previous governments. Government sources have also indicated that if more evidence is revealed in the investigation, then action can be taken against other former officials in this case (language)
