Kamal Haasan said in Chennai during an event on May 28 that Kannada language was born from Tamil language. During the promotion of his upcoming film, he started his speech by speaking ‘Ure Urawee Tamule’, which means ‘my life and my family is in Tamil language’. Referring to Kannada actor Shivrajkumar, he said, ‘That place is my family, so he (Shivrajkumar) has come here. I started my speech as Tamil, because your language (Kannada) is born from Tamil. So all of you are also part of my family.

The controversy arose after Kamal Haasan’s statement. His comment started protesting at many places in Karnataka and he began to be criticized. Posters of thugs life were tore in Bengaluru and a statewide ban warning was issued on the film in Karnataka. Kamal Haasan was also demanded to apologize unconditionally, on which Kamal Haasan says that he will not apologize.
