Air Force will remove MiG-21 fighter jet, know why this decision was taken
MiG-21 fighter jet will be farewell
New Delhi: Indian Air Force (IAF) will remove its old MiG-21 fighter jets in a phased manner by September this year. Squadrons operating this aircraft are currently on the Naal airbase in Rajasthan. These aircraft will replace indigenously developed light fighter aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark 1A. Defense officials have confirmed this.
The MiG-21 fighter aircraft have been the backbone of the Indian Air Force for decades, but due to frequent accidents and the old, it has been decided to remove them from service. MiG-21 was also called “Udta Coffin”, as there have been many accidents related to it in the last few decades, in which many pilots have died.
LCA Mark 1A fighter jet will take place
- After the retiring of MiG-21, it will replace indigenous Tejas Mark-1A fighter aircraft.
- Due to delay in delivery of Tejas, MiG-21 was extended to the flying several times in his lifetime.
- Tejas Mark-1A has been developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
- It is a multi-roll fighter jet of 4.5 generation.
- It contains several modern equipment, including active electronically scanned radar, Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile capacity and advanced electronic warfare suits.
- It is capable of hitting air from air and air to surface.
The MiG-21 was first placed in service on a trial basis in 1963. This Russian-made jet remained the backbone of the Air Force until the mid-2000s and after that Sukhoi SU-30MKI was brought.
In October 2023, MiG-21 fighter Jet of No. 4 Squadron flew over the city of Barmer in Rajasthan. The then Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary had said, “We will stop flying the MiG-21 fighter aircraft by 2025 and replace them with LCA Mark-1A.”
