Ajit agarkar: A major change regarding the selectors of the Indian cricket team may soon be revealed. The current Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar’s term is now on the verge of ending, and the BCCI has also started considering the possible name for his successor. The discussion is that this responsibility can be given to a former cricketer who has represented both Test and ODI format for India.
Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the chief selector of the Indian men’s team on 4 July 2023. According to the rules, the tenure of the selectors is two years, which also has a provision to give one additional year on the basis of performance.
In such a situation, if the performance based extension is not received, then the term of Ajit Agarkar will end on 4 July 2025. According to the current policy of the BCCI, the decision of the extension is taken only after assessing the effect of selection of the entire selection committee.
It can become a former cricketer next Chief Selector
The name that is being discussed the most in place of Agarkar is former wicketkeeper batsman Ajay Ratra, who has played 6 Tests and 12 ODIs for India. Apart from Haryana, this player has also played for Goa and Tripura.
Ajay Ratra has scored 4029 runs in first class cricket, including 8 centuries and a double century. Along with this, more than 240 victims have also been done. An unbeaten 115 innings played in Trinidad against West Indies in 2002 was one of the biggest achievements.
Thanks to this innings, Ajay became the second wicketkeeper of Team India, who scored a century abroad in Test Cricket. He also became the youngest wicketkeeper to score the youngest Test century.
Active in selection committee after retirement
Ratra retired from cricket in 2015, but he remained active till 2013 at the domestic level. The BCCI also praised his professional attitude on his retirement. Currently, he is working as a member of the selection committee along with Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Siddharth Sharath.
