Rahul Gandhi’s political career
Rahul Gandhi was born on 19 June 1970 in New Delhi. He is the eldest child of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi. He is currently an MP from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. He started his political career in 2004, when he contested and won his father’s traditional seat from Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. He was then elected MP from Amethi in 2009 and 2014. In 2007, he was appointed Congress General Secretary. In 2013, he became the Vice President of the Congress. In 2017, he took over as the President of the Indian National Congress, but left the post after the party’s defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi lost to Smriti Irani from Amethi seat, but he also contested from Wayanad in Kerala and won from there. After this, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi won from both Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad seat in Kerala. He decided to retain the Rae Bareli seat. His sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is a MP from Wayanad seat.
