Mayurbhanj: A surprising case has come to light in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. He was cremated here after the death of an elderly man. However, Handia (traditional rice liquor) was not served in the funeral. Angered by this, the villagers have excluded the family. The victim’s family alleges that the villagers are not allowing them to take water from the pond or well. Apart from this, ration is not being allowed from the shop and no one in the village is willing to talk to them. The victim’s family has complained to the police in this case, after which the police have warned of resolving the case or taking out legal action within two days.

The victim complained to the police

Actually, the whole matter is being told of Kasapada village of Sarat police station area. Recently, Ram Soren, who came from the Santhal community in the village, died. After this his son cremated. At the same time, he called the entire village at the funeral banquet, but he served Handia (traditional liquor) during the banquet, which led the villagers to get angry. The villagers have excluded the entire family from the village, including husband and wife and three children. The victim has lodged a complaint with Sarat police station.

Villagers are boycotting everywhere

According to the complaint, the victim Sangram and his wife are not being allowed to take water from ponds or tubewells. Apart from this, goods are not being given from the grocery shop. At the same time, no person from the village is talking to them. When a person tried to talk to him, the villagers warned him to pay a fine of Rs 2000. The victim’s family said, “The villagers do not even give us work, causing our life to become pathetic.” The victim has mentioned three people in her complaint, who is accused of excluding her family.

The reason for not serving alcohol

At the same time, on asking the reason for not serving ‘Handia’ at the banquet, the victim Sangram said, “My father was addicted to alcohol, due to which he died early.” We have seen tribal families being ruined due to alcohol addiction. Therefore, I decided not to serve Handia at the banquet. “A priest from the Santhal community said,” We have a tradition of having Handia with the late person during the funeral, but there is no religious rule to serve Handia at the community banquet. All this depends on the financial condition of the family of the deceased. They can serve Handia if they want, but they cannot be forced. ”

Police warns the villagers

Indeed, Handia is popular among tribal communities, especially in states like Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Meanwhile, a team led by Ramakant Patra, in -charge of the police station, visited the village and discussed the case with the villagers. The police station in -charge said, “We had a long discussion with the villagers and told them that they cannot socially exclude any family for any reason. The police have given them two days to resolve the case in a cordial manner. ”Patra said that if the case is not resolved between the members of the community at the village level, then the police may have to take legal action.
