Integrated pension scheme (UPS) all central government employees will now be eligible for retirement and death gratuity benefits under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Union Minister Jitendra Singh gave this information on Wednesday. In the context of this much awaited demand of a large section of government employees, Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said that this step addresses an important demand of government employees and brings equality in retirement profit. He said that the new provision reflects the government’s commitment to ensure social security for all categories of employees under the National Pension System (NPS).
Many reforms made to empower citizens
Jitendra Singh said in a conference organized by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievance and Pension on the last 11 years of traveling that many reforms have been made with the aim of simplifying the government, empowering citizens and making administration human. He said that central government employees under UPS will now be eligible for retirement and death gratuity benefits according to the provisions of the Central Civil Services (Payment of Gratuity under NPS) Rules, 2021. Pension and Pensioner Welfare Department (DopPW) of the Ministry of Personnel issued an order on the options of getting benefits under OPS on his dismissal from government service due to death or disability or disability for central government employees under UPS on Wednesday.
Employees will get option
Talking to PTI, Doppw Secretary V. Srinivas said, “This order gives an option to choose an employee that he dies during service, then he should be taken again under OPS.” It is progressive in nature and addresses the clarifications being sought by the employees. ”Manjit Singh Patel, president of the All India NPS Employees Federation, welcomed this government order, describing it as a historic and very important step of the government.
A large number of employees will choose UPS option
Manjit Singh Patel said that the inclusion of death-cum-retirement gratuity in UPS will remove all the misconceptions of the employees. He said that in such a situation, many employees will now opt for UPS. DOPPW notified the Central Civil Services (NPS Implementation) Rules, 2021 for regulation of service-related matters of central government employees under NPS. Its Rule 10 provides for the employee involved in the NPS to use options to get benefits under NPS or OPS in case of service on the basis of death or immunity or disability.
What did the Finance Ministry say in the notification
The Finance Ministry had said in a notification issued on 24 January that from April 1, 2025, UPS will start as an option under NPS for employees recruited in the Central Government Civil Services. Doppw on Wednesday issued another order clarifying that the central government employees under UPS will also be eligible for the benefit of retirement gratuity and death gratuity under the provisions of the Central Civil Services (Payment of Gratuity under the National Pension System) Rules, 2021. Srinivas said that this order ‘NPS and UPS brings equality between pensioners and they will also be eligible for gratuity of Rs 25 lakh’.
