Washington/Kathmandu: The US has abolished temporary protected status for Nepal. This has increased the difficulty of Nepalis living in America. More than 7,000 Nepali citizens may have to return. Explain that the US has decided to abolish temporary protected status – TPS given to Nepal.
What is this status and why Nepal got?
This status was given to Nepal after a disastrous earthquake in 2015. According to the notification issued by the US Home Ministry on Saturday, the status will end on 24 June 2025 and will not be extended after that. This status was first given to Nepal during a powerful earthquake, which caused serious damage to the country. The argument behind this decision was that it was not possible to return safely to Nepal due to natural disaster. Under the TPS, people living without any other legal status in the US allow them to live and work legally for 18 months.
Extension process and number
Currently about 12,700 Nepalese citizens in the US have TPS, out of which more than 5,500 people have so far become a legal residence in the US. However, after the TPS ends, around 7,000 Nepali citizens will now potentially leave the US and return to Nepal, until they form the basis of living in the US in another legal manner.
America announced this
According to a report by the Himalayan Times, US Home Minister Christie Nom said that after the TPS period ends, the affected persons will be given an additional 60 -day additional period by August 5, so that they can review their options or prepare for a return. He clarified that this decision has been taken on the basis of current circumstances in Nepal, where life is now normal and the basic need to continue TPS has ended.
What are concerns
This decision has been described as worrying by some organizational and human rights groups. He believes that even though Nepal is now out of emergency situation, social, economic and political stability has not yet come completely. Many Nepalese citizens living in the US have become part of the US social and economic system for years, and can now create a difficult humanitarian crisis to force them to return suddenly.
