The US has implemented an additional tariff of 25% from Wednesday, taking a tough stance on the purchase of crude oil from Russia. Following this action by President Donald Trump, the total US tariff (fee) on Indian products has reached 50%. According to PTI news, according to the order issued by the US Homeland Security Department (DHS) on Monday, the additional tariff will apply to all Indian products in the US after 12:01 am on August 27, 2025, after 12:01 am.

As you know, Trump announced a 25% tariff on India on August 7, which came into force with 70 other countries. On the same day, he also clarified that the fee rate would soon be increased to 50%, but India was given 21 days for the agreement.

Prime Minister Modi’s answer

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the US step and said that we will not compromise on the interests of farmers, cattle rearers and small industries. The pressure will definitely increase, but we will bear it.

Provision of partial exemption

Indian products that have been loaded on a ship before August 27 and which are approved for consumption in the US before 17 September 2025 will be exempted from 50% fee. For this, importers will have to give a certificate to American customs under the special code HTSUS 9903.01.85.

Analyst worry

Mark Linskott, senior advisor to the Washington -based Think Tank The Asia Group, said the US and India have turned a possible profit situation into a harmful conflict. Both countries now have to find a solution with restraint. Asia Group partner Nisha Biswal warned that 50% tariffs could cause major damage to the Indian textile and textile industry. He said that this decision has also raised questions on the ‘China +1’ strategy, which has increased the concern of companies investing in India.

Deep impact on India’s manufacturing

According to the group’s managing principal Basant Sangera, this tariff will damage the US-India trade relations and weaken global claim in India’s construction sector. American Treasury Secretary Scott Besant has accused India of making profiteering by selling Russian oil again. India has rejected these allegations as unfair and baseless.
