Kanpur: The evil of ‘triple talaq’ in Muslim community refuses to die down despite the Supreme Court outlawing the practice years back. In a fresh shocking incident, a man, who is currently working in Saudi Arabia, pronounced ‘triple talaq’ to his wife. Her only fault was that she got her eyebrows done. The incident took place in Kanpur on October 4 but came to light recently.

Husband and in-laws booked over triple talaq

The victim identified as Gulsaba complained to police about the injustice and also alleged dowry harassment from in-laws. Following the complaint, police have now filed a case against husband and in-laws. In 2022, the woman got married to Mohd Salim from Prayagraj (Allahabad).

During a video call with Gulsaba, Salim noticed that his wife got her eyebrows done and expressed his anger over why she didn’t take his permission for it. Following this incident, Salim pronounced triple talaq and her to whatever she wants. After the incident, the victim approached police and filed a complaint against husband and in-laws prompting police to file FIR under Section 498A (cruelty to wife) of IPC and Dowry Act.

Supreme Court outlawed triple talaq in 2o19

The Supreme Court in 2019 declared the practice of triple talaq as unconstitutional. The SC argued that the practice violated the fundamental rights of Muslim women. The court in its judgment also said that the practice of triple talaq gives husband the power to divorce at whim. And it doesn’t give the wife any say in the matter.

Numerous incidents have been reported in the past when Muslim men pronounce triple talaq to their wives from far away lands. In a similar incident in August, a man in Kanpur divorced his dental surgeon wife by pronouncing triple talaq on phone from Dubai. The woman claimed that her husband resorted to triple talaq as hi parents did not meet her husband’s demand for Rs 25 lakh dowry, said a report in Times of India.
