Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday addressed the students on National Space Day in Una, Himachal Pradesh, saying that Lord Hanuman can be considered the first person to travel in space and asked him to look beyond textbooks to join the traditions of India.

The event was held at the Prime Minister’s Shri School, where Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur spoke to the students. He questioned the students, “Who was the first to travel in space?” The students’ answers were unclear, after which Thakur smiled and gave his reply, “I think Hanuman ji was.” He also shared a video of this conversation on his social media account x, in which he wrote, “Pawansut Hanuman ji … first astronaut.”

“Should not keep yourself limited to the present”

He clarified his idea and said that we should not limit ourselves to the present. He said, “Till we know our thousands of years old tradition, knowledge and culture, we will remain the same as the British have taught us.” He urged students and teachers to get out of books and look at the nation, their traditions and their knowledge. He said that from this perspective, there will be a lot of new learning.

Anurag Thakur’s comment has come at a time when India is setting new records in space exploration. Earlier this year, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla became the second Indian astronaut, who stepped into space after Rakesh Sharma’s 1984 historic flight. Globally, Yuri Gagarin of Soviet Russia was the first to go into space in 1961 with crew. His historical journey was 108 minutes, in which he revolved the Earth.
