Asia Cup 2025: Gill-Jayaswal may get a big shock, this is the return of Punjab Kings

Team India is to be announced on August 19 for the Asia Cup 2025 and big news is coming out before that. Test captains Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are finding it difficult to find a place in the Asia Cup team, while Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer is believed to be sure. According to reports, the selectors and team management have an inclination towards the experienced middle-order batter, which can give balance to the team on UAE’s slow pitches.

Now only a few days are left for the Asia Cup 2025 and the selection of India’s team is to be held on August 19. This time there is a big stir regarding selection. According to Sportsstar’s report, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are extremely rarely likely to find a place in the Asia Cup team. Both batsmen performed brilliantly in IPL 2025, but at the moment the team management wants to go with the same players who have performed well in T20 International for some time.

According to this report, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer’s chances of returning to the team are faster. Iyer last played T20 International for India in December 2023, but recently he has shown great form. In the Champions Trophy 2025, Iyer scored 243 runs and was also India’s top run-scorer. In IPL 2025, he hit 604 runs and took Punjab Kings to the finals. This is the reason why they are considered important for the team on UAE’s slow and low pitches.

If Iyer is included in the team, one of Shivam Dubey or Rinku Singh may have to sit outside. Apart from this, there is an interesting turn in the wicketkeeper’s race. According to the media reports, instead of Dhruv Jurlel, Jitesh Sharma of RCB is expected to get a place in the team as a deputy of Sanju Samson. Jitesh played the last match for India in January 2024 against Afghanistan.

Significantly, Gill and Jaiswal played the last T20 International for India in July 2024 against Sri Lanka. Both have been strong, but the management believes that the current opening combination Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Verma have not performed poorly. It is not considered right to make changes in this way.

According to Sportsstar’s report, there is another major reason behind it. The final of the Asia Cup will be played on September 28 and the Test series between India and West Indies is to begin on 2 October 2 on October 2. In such a situation, the selectors believe that Gill and Jaiswal should be kept fresh for red-ball cricket. In such a situation, all eyes are now on the official team announcement to be held on August 19.
