Cricket Australia has mourned the death of Keith Stackpol. Cricket Australia wrote on X that we are all mourning the death of former Australian and Victorian cricketer Keith Stackpol. Keith played cricket game with spirit, courage and respect.
Keith Stackpol had an international debut in 1966. He played his first Test match against England on 28 January 1966. Keith, who started his career as a middle order batsman and spinner, was made the opener of Australia with Bill Lawry within 3 years. He played 43 Test matches for Australia, in addition to scoring 2807 runs, he also took 15 wickets. He also scored 7 centuries and 14 half -centuries in Test cricket. He used to bowl leg spin. Keith was also a part of the first ODI international match between England and Australia in 1971. In this match in Melbourne, he took three wickets and contributed significantly in winning Australia by five wickets.
Great performance in Ashes
Stackpol’s best performance was seen in the Ashes. He scored 1164 runs in 13 Tests against England at an average of 50.6, including 207 runs played in Brisbane in 1970, which is his highest score in Test cricket. He was appointed as the vice -captain of Australia under the captaincy of Ian Chappell in the 1972 Ashes series. In this Ashes series, he became the highest run -scorer scoring 485 runs at an average of 53.88. For this great performance, he received the honor of being nominated by Wisden’s Cricketer of the Year in 1973. He scored more than 10,000 runs in first class cricket and took 148 wickets.
Cricket Australia President Mike Baird said that Keith was one of the greatest contributors in cricket and his legacy will remain immortal in future also. Cricket Victoria President Ross Hepburn said Stackpol “was the veteran of the game”. His courage at the crease and his deep understanding of the game made him one of the most respected persons of his time.
