Indian Council of Medical Research That is, a new guideline issued by ICMR recommends that people should be cautious about excessive consumption of tea and coffee. ICMR, in collaboration with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), released 17 new dietary guidelines for Indian citizens to promote healthy eating habits across the country. The guidelines emphasize the importance of a varied diet and being physically active. The research also raised concerns over excessive consumption of caffeinated beverages, including milk tea.

The guidelines issued by ICMR state that one should avoid consuming 'tea, coffee and other caffeinated beverages with meals or soon after meals'. The medical body advises that one should avoid drinking tea for at least an hour before and after meals. He also cautioned against excessive consumption and said that caffeine present in tea and coffee stimulates the central nervous system of our body and leads to physical dependence.

The report also states that beverages such as tea bind dietary iron and make it unavailable. This suggests that the tannins present in caffeinated beverages may interfere with the absorption of iron in our body. Tannin binds iron in the stomach, which causes iron deficiency and a condition like anemia. Additionally, excessive consumption of coffee and tea increases blood pressure and causes cardiovascular irregularities.

ICMR guidelines recommend a daily intake of 300 mg of caffeine. To put this in perspective, 150 ml of brewed coffee contains 80 to 120 mg of caffeine, while instant coffee contains 50 to 65 mg. Similarly, one serving of tea contains 30 to 65 mg of caffeine. Understanding these data can help you manage your caffeine intake more effectively.
