Bangladesh coup announces general election on first anniversary, Mohammad Yunus told

The coup in Bangladesh on August 5 last year has completed one year. The then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government fell on August 5 last year after the student-led movement and nationwide violence and took refuge in India. Subsequently, Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus took over the reins of the country as the chief advisor.

Parliamentary elections will be held in February 2026

On the occasion of the first anniversary of the coup, Mohammad Yunus, while addressing the nation, has announced to hold a parliamentary elections in February next year. He said, “I will send a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner on behalf of the interim government, in which I will request to hold a national election before Ramadan in February 2026.” This announcement has been made when the earlier elections were scheduled to be held in April 2026. The address was given on the first anniversary of last year’s ‘July Revolt’, after which Sheikh Hasina had to withdraw from power.

India-Bangladesh relations come to an end

Since this coup in Bangladesh, there has been a lot of tension in relations between India and Bangladesh. The new government of Bangladesh raised strong objections due to sheikh Hasina’s shelter in India. He also requested the Government of India to formally send Hasina back. The inclination of the new interim government is more visible towards China and Pakistan and anti -India statements have also been made by Bangladesh.

In response, India has also taken a tough stand. India has controlled the import of readymade textiles coming from Bangladesh and many other items. Also, the transit and border trade was closed for the market of Northeast India.

PM Modi and Yunus meet in Bangkok

Amid these tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mohammad Yunus met on 4 April 2025 during the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok. During this, Prime Minister Modi expressed his concern about the safety of minorities in Bangladesh. In this meeting, Younus also presented a picture of an old honor received to Prime Minister Modi in 2015.
