Dhaka: The problems of Bangladesh’s deployed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have increased further. The International Crime Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday began hearing the trial in the absence of crimes against humanity against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The case is related to the suppression of protests conducted by students in 2024.
Apart from Hasina, they are also accused
In his initial statement, Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, appointed by the interim government, described Sheikh Hasina as “the center of all crimes” and demanded strict punishment for her. The prosecution has also nominated Hasina’s two top associates former Home Minister Asduzman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chaudhary Abdulla Al Mamoon as co-accused in the case.
What are the allegations
ICT has started a case under several allegations against Hasina, with the most prominent allegations last year to suppress and torture the violent movements run by ‘Students Against Description (SAD)’. The movement led to the collapse of Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, 2024. While Hasina and Kamal are facing trial in non-existence, Mamun is in custody and has agreed to become a witness. The prosecution said that he would present the testimony of the persons who were injured in protests or were eyewitnesses in the coming days.
Hasina had to run away from India and flee
Let us know that Hasina had run away from Bangladesh to India on 5 August 2024 amid growing unrest in the country and is currently living there. According to reports, former Home Minister Kamal also took refuge in India later. The interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has demanded extradition of Hasina, but no official response has been received from India so far. The ICT on July 10 framed charges against Hasina, Kamal and Mamoon, which was originally established to hear the war crimes associated with the liberation struggle of 1971.
Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to ICT
The ICT had earlier sentenced Sheikh Hasina to six months in a court case in her absence last month. This was the first time that the 77 -year -old Awami League leader was convicted in a case as he left the post of Prime Minister in August 2024. According to a report by the United Nations Human Rights Office, about 1,400 people died between 15 July and 15 August 2024, when the Hasina government ordered strict action against the protesters.
