How does this scam work? Know the whole process

You are sent a photo on Whatsapp from an unknown number or from the number of an acquaintance.

This photo is sent as an excuse for any offer, delivery, prize or emergency.

As soon as you click on the photo or download it, a dangerous code in the background becomes active.

This code makes access to your phone’s camera, microphone, location, and banking apps.

After this, thugs can remove all the necessary information from your phone and transfer money from your account.

How to identify such WhatsApp scam?

  • Unknown number

  • Profile photos and names of a friend or relative to message, but language is strange

  • The content of the photo is intimidating or luring (like “your account is about to close” or “you have won the reward”)

  • Any message that puts pressure to download or open the photo immediately

How to protect yourself?

1. Check the privacy settings of Whatsapp: Turn off the option of downloading the auto to photos, videos and documents. Settings> Storage and Data> Media Auto-Download and set everything on “Never”.

2. Block the message from unknown numbers immediately: If you get a file from any unknown number, check it well before downloading or opening it.

3. 2-step verification on: In WhatsApp, please turn on the option of two-step verification so that no one can use your account without your knowledge.
