Mehboob Khan was selected as an actor for India’s first speaking film ‘Alam Ara’, but at the time of filmmaking, Ardeshir Irani felt that instead of giving a chance to the new actor for the success of the film, it would be right to give this role to an established actor. He later gave Master Vitthal an opportunity to work in this film in place of Mehboob Khan.

Mehboob Khan (original name Ramadan Khan) was born in 1906 in Bilmiria, Gujarat. He ran away from home to Mumbai in his youth and started working in a studios. He started his career as an actor with the 1927 film ‘Alibaba and Forty Thefas’. In this film, he played the role of one of the 40 thieves. Mehboob Khan then joined Sagar Movietone and worked as a supportive actor in many films.

In the year 1935, he got a chance to direct the film ‘Judgment of Allah’. The film was liked by the audience based on the background of the war between Arabia and Rome. Mehboob Khan got a chance to direct the film ‘Manmohan’ in 1936 and ‘Jagirdar’ in 1937, but both these films could not show anything special on tickets.

In the year 1937, his ‘one road’ was displayed. This film, made on social background, liked the audience a lot. After the success of this film, he managed to make his mark as a director. The film industry suffered a lot of economic losses due to the Second World War in 1939. During this time the economic condition of Sagar Movietone became very weak and it stopped.

After this, Mehboob Khan went to National Studios with his colleagues. Where he directed films like woman, sister and roti. After working in National Studios for some time, Mehboob Khan realized that his ideology and the ideology of the company varies. In view of this, he said goodbye to the National Studios and established the Mehboob Khan Production Limited. Under whose banner, he produced films like Najma Takdeer 1943 and Humayun 1945.

The film ‘Anmol Watch’ released in the year 1946 is included in Mehboob Khan’s superhit films. The interesting fact related to this film is that Mehboob Khan wanted to make the film musical. For this purpose, he selected Nur Jahan, Suraiya and actor Surendra who was able to sing along with acting. Mehboob Khan’s decision proved correct with the success of the film. Songs like Naaja Meri Juined Mohabbat Ke Sahar and Jawan Hai Mohabbat are still popular among the audience.

The film ‘Andaz’ released in 1949 is included in Mehboob Khan’s important films. The film starring Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Nargis on Prem Triangle is included in classic films. In this film, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor worked together for the first and last time.

The film ‘On’ released in 1952 proved to be another important film by Mehboob Khan. The special thing of this film was that it was the first technicler film made in India and was made on a large scale with great expenses. An interesting fact related to this film, which was in the lead roles of Dilip Kumar, Premnath and Nadira, is that it was the first film made in India to be released together all over the world.

After the success of the film ‘Aan’, Mehboob Khan produced the film ‘Amar’. Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Nimmi played the main in this film, which became a sensitive subject like rape. Although the film did not succeed commercially but Mehboob Khan considered it an important film. The film ‘Mother India’ released in 1957 is one of the most successful films of Mehboob Khan.

Mehboob Khan produced the film ‘Woman’ in 1939 on the same story before Mother India and he also wanted to name this film as a woman but at the behest of Nargis, he named it as a pure English like ‘Mother India’. His suggestion proved to be correct by the success of the film.

The film ‘Son of India’ released in 1962 proved to be the last film of Mehboob Khan’s cine career. This film made with a big budget was badly rejected on the ticket window. However, the songs ‘Nanha Munna Rahi Hoon’ and ‘Tujhe Dil Finding Hai’ from Naushad’s composed film are still in the hearts of people.

In the last phase of his life, Mehboob Khan wanted to make a film on the devotion of the 16th -century poetess Habba Khatoon but his dream remained incomplete. The legendary filmmaker Mehboob Khan, who made a special identity among the audience with his films, said goodbye to this world on 28 May 1964.
