Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered to increase the compensation declared for the families of those killed in the Chinnaswamy Stadium accident to Rs 25 lakh. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10-10 lakh.

How many people died in the stampede?

11 people were killed and 33 others were injured in this stampede. The incident occurred when the RCB’s IPL victory was unexpectedly crowded, which was more than expected. The stadium had a seating capacity of about 35,000 but there was a crowd of about 2 to 3 lakh people on the spot. Because of which this accident happened and people had to lose their lives.

CM Siddaramaiah had informed about the crowd that the government and the cricket association did not expect such a large number of people to come. A crowd of about one lakh could be controlled in Vidhan Sauha, but the situation in Chinnaswamy Stadium became frightening. The unexpected increase of the attendees thwarted the measures to control the crowd, causing a stampede -like situation.

Most of the people who died in this incident were youths who arrived to celebrate the victory of the cricket team. Many injured are still undergoing treatment.
