Beijing/Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping will not visit Brazil for the BRICS summit to be held early next month. Although no official announcement has been made yet, media reports suggest that Xi BRICS is planning to leave the summit, which will be their first absence from the block meeting in more than a decade. Instead, the Chinese Prime Minister and Xi’s confidant Lee will attend the Kiang Summit, Hong Kong -based South China Morning Post on Wednesday said.

In Moscow, Kremlin’s foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov announced on Wednesday, “Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavarov will represent Russia at the upcoming BRICS summit to be held in Brazil, while Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the event through video links.”

Brazil is hosting 17th summit

As the current president of BRICS, Brazil is hosting its regular 17th summit at Rio de Janeiro on 6-7 July. BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The block has been expanded with five additional members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and UAE.

In 2023, President Putin left the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa due to the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) at Ukraine’s request. During the media briefing on Wednesday in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun refused to comment on the reports about Xi’s decision and said that information about China’s presence at the BRICS summit would be released at a reasonable time.

However, according to the information received at the moment, Jinping and Vladimir Putin not attending the BRICS summit remains in the discussion. (Input: PTI)
