Big step after Rishabh Pant’s injury, BCCI implemented new replacement rule in domestic cricket
BCCI INTRODUCES New Replacement Rule: After Rishabh Pant’s serious injury, the BCCI has made an important change in domestic cricket keeping in mind the safety and team balance of the players. With the introduction of this new rule, the teams will get relief in the sudden difficult situation and additional pressure on the players will also be reduced. It is believed that this step may prove to be changing the direction of the game in the coming time.
Taking lessons from Rishabh Pant’s recent injury, BCCI has made a big change in the rules of domestic cricket. Now Serious Injury Replacement Rule will be applicable in multi-day matches from 2025-26 seasons. Meaning if a player gets serious injuries during the match, such as fracture, deep cut or dislocation, then that situation will get his like-for-like replacement.
This rule will work in the same way as a system with a conversion subcutute. The difference will be so much that now there will be a replacement on any serious injury. BCCI has made it clear that it will be used only in multi-day tournaments (eg CK Naidu Trophy). This will not be applicable in white-ball tournaments like Syed Mushtaq Ali or Vijay Hazare. This rule can also be brought to IPL in future.
How will the new rule work?
- The injury should be during the game on the ground and be so serious that the players do not play further in the match.
- The replacement will be decided on-field umpires and match referee, doctor’s advice will also be taken if needed.
- The replacement player should be like-for-like, that is, the batsman instead of the batsman or a bowler, a bowler.
- The replacement will be selected only from the substitutes that have been nominated before the match starts.
- In a special case, if the wicketkeeper gets injured and there is no other keeper in the nominated subsa, then the referee can allow the team to take a new keeper from outside.
- Once the replacement approves, the engine will not be able to play again in the match.
BCCI has also made it clear that the same warings, penalty time and suspension will be applicable to the replacement player which was on the England player.
Other important changes
New rule of short run: If the batters do not deliberately complete the runs and try to cheat, then it will be considered as a decreptic short run.
Retired rule: Now if a batsman retires without the right cause (illness/injury), then his innings will be considered as “Retired – OUT” and he will not be able to return to bat again, even if the opposition captain allows.
This step has been taken by BCCI because recent injuries like Rishabh Pant and England’s Chris Woakes had completely spoiled the balance of the match. It is now expected that this new rule will make multi-day cricket even more fair and competitive.
