Badambadi: A case of alleged rape and blackmail has shaken Odisha in which a 19-year-old college girl was lured by her boyfriend’s deceit. She became a victim of repeated sexual assaults, videographed by her tormentors and used to ensnare her in a cycle of terror.
The victim, who filed a complaint with the Badambadi police station in Cuttack, recounted a harrowing ordeal that began during her birthday celebrations in a cafe in Cuttack during the Dussehra festival, news agency PTI reported. Her boyfriend, allegedly aided by the cafe owner, surreptitiously captured an intimate video of her.
Using this video as leverage, the boyfriend and five others, including a minor, subjected the victim to repeated rapes, leveraging her fear and vulnerability, Cuttack DCP Jagmohan Meena told PTI.
The police, acting swiftly on the complaint filed on November 4, apprehended the boyfriend, the cafe owner, and three others within the next two days. All six accused have been charged under various sections of the IPC, the IT Act, and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The police have recovered the incriminating videos from the accused’s mobile phones and sent them to the State Forensic Science Laboratory in Bhubaneswar for analysis.
Meena, addressing a press conference, stated that the victim was assaulted twice by the accused. He urged any woman facing blackmail to come forward and report it to the police without hesitation.
Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, commenting on the case, assured that the government would ensure that the culprits are punished. He highlighted this incident as a setback to the state’s ongoing efforts to achieve a crime-free environment for women by 2036.
