1. Prince Siddharth’s disillusionment: Prince Siddharth, who later became Gautama Buddha, lived a luxurious life. His father, King Shuddhodan made all efforts to keep him away from sorrows. But, one day when Siddharth came out on a tour of the city, he saw four scenes- an old man, an ailing person, a corpse and a ascetic.
These scenes had a profound impact on his mind and he had knowledge of the fleeting and sorrows of life. This disillusionment inspired him to abandon worldly pleasures and get out in search of truth.
2. Story of Angulimal: Angulimal was a dreaded bandit, who killed hundreds of people and wore garlands of their fingers. When Buddha came in his way, Angulimal also threatened to kill him. However, Buddha’s peace and compassion melted Angulimal’s heart.
Buddha preached to him to abandon violence and take the path of peace. Angulimal threw his sword and became a disciple of Buddha. This story shows that compassion and love can also change the most rigorous heart.
3. Which Gautami and Mustard Grains: A woman, the only son of which Gautami died. Distraught with sorrow, she was begging everyone to take her dead child alive in her lap. Someone advised him to go to Buddha. With which Gautami did Buddha tell that he should go to the entire village and in the house where there was no death, a handful of mustard grains were asked.
Which Gautami turned around in the whole village, but he did not find a single house where no one died. Then he understood that death is the unwavering truth of life. 4. Buddha and Elephant: Once, Buddha was passing through a village, where some mischievous youths provoked a crazy elephant. The elephant ran to kill people in anger. When the elephant reached Buddha, the Buddha put his calm and compassionate vision on him.
The elephant immediately calmed down and sat at Buddha’s feet. This story shows that love and peace have great power, which can also calm anger and violence.
5. Buddha and water pitcher: Once, Buddha was traveling with his disciples. When he was thirsty, Buddha asked one of his disciples to bring water. The disciple went to the river, but he saw that some people were washing clothes and the vehicles were passing, causing the water to become dirty. He returned empty handed. After a while, Buddha asked the same disciple to go after a while.
This time, the disciple noticed that dirty water had slowly sits down and clean water has come up. He brought clean water. Buddha said that the state of our mind is also similar. When we are disturbed, we do not see anything clear, but when we are calm, the truth appears on its own.
