Colombo, Sri Lanka: On Sunday, a passenger bus slipped from the rock in the tea -bound mountainous area of Sri Lanka and fell into the ditch, killing 21 people and injured 35 others. A Sri Lankan police spokesperson has informed about this painful accident. Police said the accident occurred in a mountainous area of Central Sri Lanka near Kotamale city, about 140 km (86 mi) from Colombo early Sunday.
Police spokesperson Budhika Mathunga said that at least 21 people died and 35 other injured are undergoing treatment in hospitals in the accident occurred in the tea -producing hills. A local television showed that the bus was overturned under a ditch, while workers and others were helping to evacuate the injured. The driver was injured and he was admitted to the hospital for treatment. About 50 people were aboard the bus at the time of the accident.
Investigation of the cause of the accident started
Manathunga said that the police have started an investigation to find out that the accident occurred due to the driver’s negligence or the technical fault of the bus. Police said that the bus was operated by a government bus company. In Sri Lanka, especially in hilly areas, deadly bus accidents are common. Often, bus accidents occur due to careless driving and poor maintenance and narrow roads. (AP)
