Children will not be able to use social media in Australia, government will bring law
Canberra, 07 November (HS). In Australia, soon boys and girls under 16 years of age will not be able to use social media. The Albany government today reiterated its pledge to ban it. The government has made this promise to the citizens. Australia’s Communications Minister Michelle Rowland informed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s resolve at the press conference.
Prime Minister Albanese also answered the questions of journalists. He said that a law will be brought to ban social media for children under 16 years of age. Australia will be the leading country in the world to take this initiative. Michel Rolland said the ban would directly impact social media giants Instagram and Facebook, as well as ByteDance’s video-sharing TikTok and Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). Alphabet’s YouTube will also probably come under the purview of this law.
The Prime Minister said that social media is harming children. The legislation will be introduced in Parliament this year. This law will be implemented 12 months after getting the approval of the MPs. There will be no exemption for children who have parental consent to use social media. It is noteworthy that this proposed ban in Australia was announced earlier this year. This was echoed in Parliament also. It received broad bipartisan support in Parliament.
The Prime Minister of Australia said that tech companies have failed to take necessary steps regarding the security of children. That’s why his government is going to take this step. The draft of the new law will come out by this week. It will be presented in Parliament in November this month.
