New Delhi: A special session was organized in the Delhi Assembly as a ‘Constitution Assassination Day’ on completion of 50 years of Emergency. Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta, Deputy Speaker Mohan Bisht, Union Minister Jitendra Singh and India TV Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma attended the special guests on the occasion. The session remembered the attack on democracy during the Emergency and paid tribute to those who struggled to protect the constitution. On this occasion, Rajat Sharma remembered how he had seen the emergency of emergency very closely at the age of just 17.

‘I was just 17 years old at that time’

India TV chairman Rajat Sharma shared his experiences during the Emergency in his speech. He said, ‘You all know how the emergency was. I was only 17 years old at that time, but what happened that night, I still remember 50 years ago. Jai Prakash Narayan ji formed a student committee. Arun ji led that committee. Arun ji’s father took him out of the house. Arun ji came to the campus. Then Vijay Goyal ji and we four-five people started shouting slogans in the campus of Delhi University, ‘The blood of the youth is in your hands.’ Arun ji was speaking, the police gradually started growing and then the police took them.

‘We decided to take out the newspaper’

Rajat Sharma further said, ‘We surrounded the police station to get rid of our leader. The police told us that you can be shot in the emergency. Vijay Goyal’s father was arrested. Police also went to my house. Then we decided that we would not go home. We thought, what to do now? So we decided to take out the newspaper. My writing style was good. We used to take out cyclostal papers up to 400 and at night, students, teachers, SHO and SP’s house used to put them on their prescriptions. The journey of my journalism started without training.

‘Judge sent me to jail without listening’

Referring to his arrest, Rajat Sharma said, ‘After some time, after Vijay Goyal’s departure, the police came, hit me, handcuffed. Asked where to meet Madan Lal Khurana. I said, I do not know them, I know Vijay Goyal. The police got Vijay Goel called. I told Vijay, ‘There is something black in the pulses.’ Hearing this, the police beat me overnight, blood also came out. The next day was produced in court. The judge sent me to jail without listening. In jail, I was kept in Mundakhana with Criminals instead of political ward. All there were thieves and killers there. The political ward was like a camp of the union. Stayed in jail throughout the month, my brother made me bail with great difficulty. ‘

‘We did the satyagraha and went to Tihar again’

Rajat Sharma further said, ‘In jail I came to know about the Sangh how he was preparing for Satyagraha. In the law faculty, we performed Satyagraha and went to Tihar again. Got a chance to study there. Sometimes news used to come that we would leave us in the desert of Siberia, sometimes news came that he would take it in a water ship and sink. Referring to the end of the Emergency, he said, ‘When elections were held and results came, millions of people took to the streets. People had deep resentment about emergency. At that time the newspapers were closed, only Doordarshan and All India Radio were heard. But when the public meeting started, Ramlila came to the ground, all the roads were filled. At that time the government had done the film ‘Bobby’ so that fewer people would come.

Vijendra Gupta also remembered emergency

Recalling the Emergency, Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta said in his address, ‘It should be remembered for ages and how democracy was murdered in an unconstitutional manner. Do not forget it, do not forgive it. Till date the accused of emergency have not been punished. What Shah Commission did was not enough. An attempt was made to change the Constitution of Babasaheb. This is a lesson for those who call for the Constitution today. Words like ‘Socialism’ and ‘Secularism’ were added to the Constitution by applying emergency. An attempt was made to change the constitution in such a way that Indira Gandhi always remains in power. There is dictatorship in the Congress party’s DNA.
