Controversy over Pakistan conference in Harvard: Organized after Pahalgam attack

The Pakistan conference took place recently at the South Asia Institute of Harvard University, USA. Pakistan Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Pakistan Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh participated in it.

The event took place on 27 April, which was organized by Pakistani students. There was a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, 4 days before this event i.e. on 22 April.

Indian students lodged their opposition and objections in front of Harvard regarding this conference. After this, Harvard separated himself from this issue and removed the information of the program from his website.

Indian students wrote a letter to US Secretary of State

Two Indian students Surabhi Tomar and Rashmish Koparkar wrote a letter to Harvard Administration and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In the letter, he wrote that it was wrong to call the university to Pakistani government officials.

Students wrote- It is wrong to call government officials promoting or justifying terrorism. People will also raise the question on Harvard that the university is also involved in the terrorist attack.

Students also demanded that Harvard Pahalgam should publicly condemn the attack. This event was organized by Pakistani students of Harvard.

Cleaning of Harvard’s South Asia Institute- was organized independently by students

Apart from this, it was also learned that Hitesh Hathi, Executive Director of the University, had recently participated in a panel discussion with Pakistani-American historian Ayesha Jalal.

Amid growing controversy over the Pakistan conference, the South Asia Institute of Harvard University issued a statement in its defense. The institute expressed its condolences to the victims of the Pahalgam attack, as well as reported that the students had organized the conference independently.
