Playing for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League 2024, Nicholas Pooran surpassed an elite T20 world record of Mohammed Rizwan with his tiny 27-run knock on Saturday.

New Delhi: West Indies wicketkeeper batter Nicholas Pooran had a memorable outing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 clash between Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) and Barbados Royals (BR) on Saturday. Although playing a tiny knock of 15-ball 27 for TKR, he shattered the world record for most runs in a calendar year in T20 cricket. Mohammad Rizwan held the record so far, establishing it back in 2021 by smashing 2036 runs.

At the end of his short but useful innings, Pooran took his year tally to 2059 runs. He has been in fantastic form throughout the year as he achieved the remarkable feat of playing for various teams of global cricket leagues, for the national and domestic teams. He represented MI Emirates, MI New York, Northern Super Chargers, Rangpur Riders, Durban Super Giants, Lucknow Super Giants, and West Indies in 2024.

Rizwan took 45 innings to set the world record, with an impressive average of 56.66 and boasting one century and 18 half-centuries. However, Pooran took 65 innings to reach the milestone, with an average of over 42. Although he didn’t score a hundred in 2024, he struck 14 fifties including many scores in the line of 90s.

Pooran is quite explosive when it comes to power hitting and that is evident from his strike rate of 160.63 in 2024 which has dwarfed Rizwan’s 132.03. This is also the third year when Pooran has crossed 1000 runs in a year in the T20s.
