Daughters got flight: women literacy rose from 33% to 74%:
Patna: To understand the education system of Bihar, it is necessary to take a look at its past. The state’s educational situation was worrisome before 2005. Especially the education of girls was almost neglected. At that time, the female literacy rate is just 33.57 percent Was, and the condition of schools is very shabby. But as soon as Nitish Kumar took charge as the Chief Minister in 2005, education was given the highest priority – essentially the education of girls was given the form of a campaign.
Nitish government’s thinking and special attention to daughters
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made it clear from the beginning that the foundation of social change in the state can only be laid by education. They said, “We cannot imagine a progressive society until our daughters come forward in studies.” Under this thinking, many revolutionary programs like Chief Minister Girls Cycle Scheme, Dress Scheme, Scholarship, and Mid Day Meal Scheme were launched. These schemes played a big role in bringing girls to school and keeping them in studies.
Its effect was also clearly seen. By 2025, the female literacy rate of Bihar has increased to 73.91 percent. It is not only a statistical achievement, but also a strong story of social change.
Number of schools and tremendous increase in teachers
Before 2005, there were only 53,993 schools in Bihar, which has now increased to 75,812. It is not only a number, but is a symbol of providing education to every corner of the state. Similarly, there were earlier 2.25 lakh teachers, who have now exceeded 5.97 lakhs. This expansion not only depths the reach of education, but also improves the quality of studies.
Widespread improvement in school buildings and basic facilities
Prior to 2005, most of the schools had common problems like dilapidated buildings, unclean toilets, shortage of drinking water and poor seating. But now more than 75 percent of the schools have paved and safe buildings, clean toilets, drinking water facilities and adequate seating arrangements. This change not only gives a safe environment for students, but also instills confidence in the minds of parents.
Inclusion of technical education and digital India
The education of Bihar is no longer limited to books and blackboards. Through smart classes, digital classes, and e-learning platforms, students are getting video lectures, online tests and virtual classroom experience. This has increased their learning ability and also interested in studies.
Talking about technical institutes, in 2005 there were only 2 engineering colleges, 13 polytechnics, and 23 ITIs in the state. Today these figures have changed – now 38 engineering colleges, 46 polytechnics, and 152 ITI institutes are active across the state. This has opened the way for the youth to get technical education and get better employment opportunities.
Higher education new height
The Nitish government has also expanded extensively in the field of higher education. Where earlier there were only 10 state universities, now their number is 21. In addition, Bihar’s educational landscape has emerged strongly at the national and international level with the establishment of reputed institutions like IIT Patna, IIM Bodh Gaya, NIFT Patna, and IIIT Bhagalpur.
Historical growth in education budget
In 2005, where Bihar’s education budget was only ₹ 4,366 crore, now this figure has crossed ₹ 77,690 crore. This financial commitment reflects the priority and foresight of the state government. This budget focuses not only on structure, but also on quality and inclusion.
A ray of education reached every section
The state government implemented such schemes, which were successful in delivering education to the last person of the society. Scholarship plans, mid -day meal, and special incentive programs for girls opened the way to educate the deprived and weaker sections. There has been a huge decrease in the number of students leaving school, especially in girls, there has been a major improvement in dropout rate.
This change is not just the story of data, it is an inspirational journey of millions of daughters and youth who made education their strength and gave a new direction to the whole of Bihar.
